HAWAII Sunset Beach
vintage offset lithograph travel surfing poster
dimensions: 21 3/8" x 30"
date: c.1966
condition: Good overall condition; this poster has been linen backed. Restoration at the corners and along the edges. Minor creases on the image. Excellent, bright coloration as two surfers are riding big waves.
When I looked closer at the surfers, I couldn't tell who the surfer on the left is, but when I noticed the horizontal black and white trunks and legendary stance on one of them, I immediately thought of big wave surfing icon, Greg Noll (1937-2021), aka Da Bull. I realized this wasn't just any cool, great, or unusual, Hawaiian surf travel poster; the hunt for more info was on.
Based on my findings of a similar image, the original image was likely taken by Don James (d. Dec. 24, 1996), an avid surfer as well, known for documenting the golden era of surfing, with photos of himself and friends. He started at the age of 16, in 1936 through the 1990s, up until his death.
"During the post-Gidget era his talents appeared in commercials and on posters, Don James has been described as "The Premier Photographer of Surfing"." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_James_(surfer)
I then came across 1965 Duke Invitational, Sunset Beach on YouTube. A little more digging and I found the full-length version of the competition (1.) This was a one-day event that took place and was recorded on December 15, 1965, where 24 of the world’s best surfers were invited to compete. Directed by Larry Lindberg, and production led by Bruce Brown, the 1st annual competition was aired in January or February, 1966 bringing a whole new perspective of surfing to the world.
Watch: 1965 Duke Invitational, Sunset Beach (full length)
This image on the poster corresponds with Peter Cole and Greg Noll in the 1st heat of the competition as shown in the film. This travel poster highlights Sunset Beach as the destination spot for surfers, 45 miles away from the touristy Waikiki. a 10 mile stretch of "the biggest surf, the most consistent and fearsome stretch of all."
