The sixties were an explosive time in America marked by protest against the abuse and mistreatment of blacks erupting in a demand for their civil liberties, full equality for women and protests to end the Vietnam War. Following the deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, riots became more common as the nation grew angrier during these difficult times when the hopes of the younger generation fading, particularly for minority groups and their supporters. The gay and transgender community pushed back against the abuse as well in a riot with the police that lasted six days, starting in the early hours of June 28, 1969. The riots marked a turning point for the LGBTQ community fostering awareness and equality that continues today.
