original collage art, SUPREME logo superimposed over Pablo Escobar's mugshot

The logo, which symbolizes both high status and rebellion, was inspired by famed conceptual and graphic artist Barbara Kruger, and superimposed over the famous smiling mugshot of one of Colombia's most notorious rebels and criminals, Pablo Escobar.

ITEM DETAILS
Artist: anonymous
Date: c.2000
Dimensions:; 16" x 20"
Medium: mixed media; vinyl transfer mounted to (a possibly reused ?? ) stretched canvas with touches of acrylic paint for accent. There appears to be text underneath, possibly preexisting and painted over or part of the overall design.
Format: Vertical
Condition: Good. Used. Small indentation in the canvas at the upper left side, and slight lift of the transfer at the right side of the top and bottom edges. Dark grey paint accents added for effect; made to mimic a grainy mugshot.

Picked from a movie/television studio crew member's stash, it's hard to tell when and for what reason this was created exactly. It could have been used as a prop piece or just someone experimenting and taking artistic license.

The artwork could have been created in the early 2000s and as recent as a year ago, since SUPREME, a contemporary street style company, was formed in 1994.

An interesting note about the logo: the original creator, Barbara Kruger, didn't claim intellectual property of the red box and white Futura font idea from 1981,

"In her view, intellectual property doesn’t exist; it’s just a tool of corporate control. For the same reason, the artist didn’t pursue legal action."

Ironically, Supreme "sued another company for using a similar design. It demanded that the brand Married To The Mob pay $10,000,000 for using the Supreme Bitch label on caps and T-shirts. Barbara Kruger, in turn, called the situation a stupid farce and stated that she was waiting to be accused of copyright infringement." - Logos-World
