antique lithographic German beer brand poster
dimensions: 28 5/8" x 43 1/2"
date: c.1890s
condition: Good. Toning, wear, and minor paper loss along the edges. The poster was printed in two sections and joined, resulting in creases along the folded join - there's a patch of tape on the back mending a tear on the left side of the fold. Excellent color.
image of a man enjoying his beer with the brand's mascot, a goat.
printer: Camille Burckhardt Printers, Wissembourg
The picture sheet printing works in Wissembourg/Alsace was founded in 1833 by Jean Frédéric (Johann Friedrich) Wentzel (1807-1869) and received permission from the French state to print lithographs in 1835 and to print letters in 1851. Subsequent owners included his son, Frédéric Charles Wentzel (d. 1877), from 1869; Georg Friedrich Camille Burckhardt in 1880; Emil Schenk and Hermann Junk ("C. Burckhardt's successors") in 1889; René Ackermann in 1906; and finally Charles Ackermann in 1918. After the annexation by France, the company operated from 1918 as "Imagerie alsacienne R. Ackermann, Wissembourg, succr. F. C. Wentzel." In 1955, the then-owner, Charles Müller, transformed the company into a public limited company. The long-established company had to close in 2007 for economic reasons. (Google Translate: https://westfalen.museum-digital.de/people/202179?navlang=en)
