This is an exhibition poster in London for the benefit of the Belgians, whose neutrality during the First World War was challenged as the small country became a gateway for the Great War; putting up a strong resistance, its civilians and cities endured some of the most brutal loss and suffering.
The rich gold wash contrasts against the deep brown tones, and rapidly drawn black outlines capture an environment of frantic, yet organized energy. One of the workers climbing a ladder looks at you as if to say, get your shovel, there's work to do. Although its civilians and cities endured some of the most brutal suffering of the entire war, Belgium put up fierce resistance. Brangwyn doesn’t focus on the wounded and destruction. The poster reflects the dignity and resilience of the citizens taking the initiative to restore their cities and their homes.
This poster isn’t solely about the ravages of war. It’s a call to support strength in the face of adversity and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Through research, I've discovered examples of the poster, as in the loc.gov archives, with location and date-specific information about the event: "The remaking of Belgium exhibition, to help Belgians who are preparing for reconstruction. Open April 7 to 27 10am to 8pm Admission 1/- At University College Gower St W. C. where contributions may be sent to: The Belgium Town Planning Committee"
