Another project that was brought to me for localized cleaning was a small prayer book from the 1940s, with wear along the edges, and on the front and back covers; some discoloration on the back cover, and foxing on most of the pages, as shown below in the before and after pics. The heaviest foxing was on the last few pages and a stain that was painted over.
We were able to significantly reduce the foxing, and repair minor paper loss; the heavier stain, however, remained and it was opted to leave as/is. Especially working with delicate paper, often times the goal is to reduce the discoloration. Overworking a stain, may in fact, cause more harm.
